Painted Internal Glazed Cupboards, Bespoke Kitchen

4 minute read

Painted internal glazed cupboards, bespoke kitchen design...are glazed cabinets only for the ultra-tidy? We think not & we often include one or two glazed cupboards in our designs. With only a couple of glazed cabinets, you'll still have plenty of storage cupboards with solid doors, behind which to keep / hide all your kitchen paraphernalia.

Where to use glazed cupboards?

We often place glazed cupboards in or near the dining area. It's a convenient place to store and display pretty things - glasses, much loved crockery, collected pieces, items that are obviously useful but also have character. In the example glazed cupboards above, you can see favourite plates, homeware, and glassware Both cupboards look sleek because they are curated.

The white cabinet is right next to the dining area and is used to display mostly white crockery in all different shapes – plates, bowls, jugs, cake stands. Using the glass here and nowhere else in the kitchen helps to zone this part of the open-plan kitchen dining living room. It has the relaxed aesthetics of a freestanding dresser, while simultaneously being perfectly in sync with the rest of the kitchen.

The cupboard with red internals is used only for glassware, all different glasses, but they sit together beautifully. It means that the beautiful glasses can be seen, but without the dusting requirements of open shelving.

If you have high ceilings with extra tall cabinetry, glazing can also be useful for top cupboards, so you don't forget what you've got up there. High glazed cupboards are also nice spots for a bit of lighting.

An opportunity for colour, neutral or accent

The cupboard internals and shelves of glazed cupboards can be painted in the same colour as the frames and doors (see the white example above) or in a contrasting colour (see the red internals example above).

  • The white colour choice is perfect for this multi-functional open-plan living space with kitchen, dining and snug, designed for a young family it's a hug of cooking, eating, working, playing, art and entertaining. So the calm contemporary monochrome colour palette works perfectly here.
  • The red colour choice was inspired by the vintage Suzani which is framed above the sofa in the snug of this kitchen extension. The deep red is threaded carefully through from the snug to the kitchen and dining area, with the glassware cupboards seamlessly connecting the spaces.

A chance to enhance lighting

Lighting can easily change the mood in a room. With internal lights in glazed cupboards you can create a soft ambient glow, adjusting the brightness and colour to create the atmosphere you want for a family dinner or entertaining friends.

Additional texture

Using glazing in the kitchen brings in another texture, whether you choose clear or reeded (also called fluted) glass. Layering of different textures - e.g. painted cabinets, wooden floor, ceramic sink, brass handles, panelling, textiles, crockery and so on - all create character and comfort in your kitchen.
