Top tips from our designers on kitchen storage to declutter and stay organised ...
We know everyone wants to declutter and keep their home organised, especially the kitchen, ready for cooking, eating, relaxing, and entertaining. Storage is key to giving everything a place, with as much as possible tucked neatly out of sight. Here are our top tips to help design a beautifully organised kitchen.
Considering Kitchen Storage to Declutter and Stay Organised:
1. Breakfast Cupboard with Pocket-Style Doors or Bi-fold doors
Pocket-style and bi-fold doors are a brilliant way to conceal small kitchen appliances (coffee machine, toaster, kettle) and maintain a sleek, streamlined look. Appliances sit inside the cupboard, on the countertop, plugged in ready to use, but not on show. Pocket-style doors slide back into cabinetry, while bi-fold doors fold, both are useful so they don't get in the way when you want the cupboards to be open. We have both types at our kitchen showroom. These doors are great for making it easy to access items like the coffee machine, blender, juicer and toaster as well as cereals, jams, mugs and so on when needed in the breakfast rush; while keeping them hidden when not in use. It’s a smart solution for maintaining a clutter-free aesthetic. Having a breakfast cupboard also just makes so much more sense than having numerous smaller cupboards with tea in one, cereal in another, mugs and bowls in another etc.
2. Considering Kitchen Appliances
Incorporating appliances into your cabinetry ensures a cohesive design. For example, a microwave can go into a cupboard so that it doesn't take up any worktop space. This approach keeps your countertops clearer and ensures everything, especially the bigger things each has a place, creating a harmonious flow throughout the kitchen. Many of our clients also ask us to design around their Thermomix so that they can use it and keep it inside a cupboard, out of sight but always accessible and often in use.
3. Maximising Vertical Space in your Kitchen Design
Don’t let vertical space go to waste. Floor-to-ceiling bespoke cabinetry is a kitchen design feature we love to include and have the luxury of doing so as all our kitchens are individually made to order. Cabinetry up to the ceiling minimises dust traps and is great for providing ample storage for those items you don’t use every day. Consider including adjustable shelving, pull-out racks and a ladder to make accessing high-up items effortless.
4. Kitchen Drawers
Drawers can be used for so much more than cutlery and utensils, and we design them to maximise kitchen storage to declutter and stay organised. When I was growing up, we had a total of three drawers in our kitchen. In comparison our Courthouse Kitchen, bespoke by Shere Kitchens, has 24 drawers which help to keep everything accessible and the countertops clutter free so the open-plan space always looks lovely and is easy for the family to use.
Deep drawers with dividers are ideal for storing pots and pans, while slimline drawers can house tea, coffee pods or spices, neatly organised so you can see what you've got. Adding pegboards in deep drawers to keep plates in place, and adjustable organisers inside drawers for things like baking parchment and tin foil. It keeps everything in place and makes everything easy to find. Knife blocks to keep knives in order, and drawers within drawers is also a great idea, for example, to separate pans and pan lids. We've also made extra strong and deep drawers for a client who wanted to store away bulk-buy dry dog food, but have it easy to access in pull-out drawers, ready to serve.
5. Hidden Kitchen Pull-Outs
Pull-outs are a dream for staying organised. From slim pull-out spice / oil racks by the cooker, pull-outs with dividers for baking trays, to compartments for recycling & waste bins, these discreet additions ensure every inch of space is functional and clutter-free. These can be made from metal or wood to suit your preferences.
6. Multi-Purpose Kitchen Island
A kitchen island can be a place for prepping meals; enjoying food at a breakfast bar, and it can be a storage powerhouse. Incorporate cupboards, drawers, and open shelving for cookery books into the design to maximise functionality. This is especially useful in smaller kitchens where every bit of storage counts. Don't forget power points so you can charge phones and laptops when working from home, which can be hidden in 'docking drawers'. And if you have space, a tea towel rail so you don't have to hang tea towels over the oven handles.
7. Custom Walk-in Pantry Design
A walk-in pantry or a tall & wide larder cupboard can be tailored to fit your needs. Adjustable shelving, pull-out baskets, drawers with dividers, spice racks, and integrated lighting help keep everything from dried goods to baking supplies organised and easy to access.
A walk-in pantry can provide a mini kitchen - a space to prep food and hide dirty dishes while entertaining. Including enough worktop space, a dishwasher, sink, tap and bins is a good idea if you plan to use your walk-in pantry in this way. Plenty of storage for dry goods, shelving for ingredients you always want to hand, spice racks, wine rack, and perhaps an additional fridge to accommodate extra food and drinks when entertaining.
8. Bespoke Kitchen Storage Solutions for Quirky Spaces
Every kitchen is unique, and bespoke cabinetry lets you make the most of awkward corners, alcoves, sloping ceilings, beams, and wonky walls. A custom drinks cupboard, corner carousel, or slim cupboard for baking trays can transform tricky spaces into practical storage. Particularly in period properties, we've found that it's helpful to design and make shallower depth cupboards so that they fit in the space available and food doesn't get lost at the back.
Implementing these storage solutions into your kitchen design can help you declutter and create a kitchen that’s a joy to use every day.
