Green Kitchens

6 minute read

Green kitchens inspired by nature & biophilic design, highlighting the connection between inside & outside living.  To achieve this beautiful feeling, we think it's important to compliment your chosen green with wood (eg oak beams or a bespoke oak countertop), earthenware, & larger windows to let the light in. But this blog post is focused on our use of green in kitchen designs. 0

There’s something beautifully timeless about green kitchens or a kitchen with a green accent. Earthy yet elegant, deeply connected to nature, it’s no surprise green is having a moment. But rather than being trend-driven, we believe green kitchens have a lasting charm, especially when designed and made to order.

At Shere Kitchens, we create bespoke kitchens for clients across Surrey, West Sussex, Hampshire and South London, and this green kitchen (see featured image above), is part of a larger open-plan kitchen and living space, & is a perfect example of how beautiful a kitchen can be when it's designed specifically for your home and lifestyle.

Why choose a green kitchen?

Green has a calming, grounding quality that works particularly well in busy family homes. It feels fresh in spring and cosy in winter, changing subtly with the light throughout the day. For many of our clients, green kitchens offer a connection to the garden beyond, especially in homes with large windows, French doors or ultra-slim aluminium sliding doors like in this project (see link above to our Summer Kitchen).

What makes green particularly versatile is its range. You can go deep and moody with forest tones, bright and punchy with olive, sage or even lime, or soft and subtle with a grey-green. The cabinetry in this space leans towards a classic mid-green with a slight blue undertone. It feels traditional yet totally fresh, especially when paired with warm oak interiors and lightly aged brass handles. The colour for this project was actually chosen to remind the owners of beautiful holidays on the coast of England.

If you’re considering a green kitchen but unsure which direction to take, that’s where our bespoke service really shines. We work closely with each client to choose colours that suit their space, the architecture of their home, lighting and the way they live.

The benefits of a bespoke kitchen

Every kitchen we make is designed entirely from scratch. That means we’re not restricted by standard sizes, limited finishes or preset colour options. Whether you’re renovating a period property in the Surrey Hills, or building a contemporary extension in London, our designs are made to fit perfectly.

The green kitchen shown above is part of an open-plan kitchen extension that needed to work hard: as a family kitchen, dining area, and space for entertaining. The tall floor-to-ceiling cabinetry creates elegant symmetry and provides plenty of storage, including a hidden fridge and larder cupboard. Glass-fronted doors keep the overall look light and allow for favourite ceramics or glassware to be displayed.

The joinery is designed to look and feel like fitted furniture rather than standard kitchen units, which brings a calm, cohesive feel to the space.

A kitchen that suits real life

Functionality is key in any kitchen, and our clients often ask us to create spaces that are beautiful but also easy to live in. In this project below, the green cabinetry on the island is just one part of a much larger open-plan kitchen-living area, designed to feel welcoming from the moment you walk in. Doesn't the green look lovely with the pink.

The dining table sits by the French doors, just out of shot, bathed in natural light from the garden. The star pendants above give the island warmth, softness, and a touch of fun. Every design decision, from cabinet colours, details, mouldings, flooring & different handles, has been considered with how the space will be used and enjoyed every day.

Many of our clients come to us because they want their kitchens to fit perfectly, work brilliantly and also to feel personal. They want something thoughtfully designed and made for their home. That’s where our team really excels.

Green kitchens with timeless appeal

One reason green kitchens are so popular among our clients in Surrey and South London is that they don’t date. They work in both classic country homes and modern kitchen extensions, and they age beautifully.

If you’re investing in a kitchen to love for years, it’s worth thinking beyond passing trends. We always encourage clients to consider how a space feels to be in, not just how it looks. Green adds depth and interest, and when coupled with natural materials like timber and stone, it creates a lasting sense of natural quality.

This kitchen features traditional Shaker style in-frame cabinetry. The green brings out the warmth of the wood and adds contrast to the stone tiles. The overall effect is both calm and characterful.
