Design Details in Bespoke Kitchens

We appreciate the incredible flexibility we have in designing our kitchens, to work specifically for each individual space, enhancing original features and finding ways to make more of every home renovation. Our kitchens are custom made to order so our designs, while often classic in style, are always made-to-measure and unique. With thousands of possible design details in bespoke kitchens we thought it might be useful to go through some details we think bring our kitchen designs together, by looking at this recent project ...

This kitchen was designed for an expansive country cottage with an abundance of charm and character, located in a rural village on the outskirts of Guildford. The original kitchen was quite modest, with yellow pine giving a rustic feel like a traditional ski chalet. The clients were keen to create a kitchen suitable for their family, easily able to accommodate friends, with plenty of storage so that it's simple to keep tidy, suiting the heritage of the house, while suitable for twenty-first century living. 

Making the most of the space

To make the house enjoyable for the family to live in, the kitchen and dining rooms were knocked through to make a sizable open plan kitchen dining living area. The separate Breakfast Room was made into the most snuggly of snugs (which you can just see on the right-hand side of this image). The original utility and downstairs WC were also knocked into one, to make a combined utility and boot room. 

With the floor space and walls agreed it was time to consider the details, how to provide enough storage, places to prep food, cook, sit and enjoy ...

The Aga was kept in its original position and the sink was kept in place too - overlooking the beautiful mature garden and natural wildlife pond, complete with a family of Coots.

Some details we included in this kitchen:

• We often include a bank of wall-to-wall cupboards along one wall to provide super storage. In this kitchen they were recessed into a wall on the left (out of shot - but you can see and read more about the recessed cabinetry by clicking here)
• A kitchen Island creates a central hub, a breakfast bar, with cupboards and drawers. The Oak worktop on the Island also brings in a lovely softness, texture and warmth, encouraging people to sit for a chat, giving the room a social fee.
• A sink / cooker run keeping cupboards low allows for an appreciation of the lovely light and the proportions of the room. 
• Effortlessly stylish Shaker doors, traditionally in-frame. All the cupboards are bespoke, made to order, to fit the space perfectly. The Island cupboards and frames here are painted in a deep green - Invisible Green by Little Greene; and combined with a soft dusky pink - Setting Plaster by Farrow and Ball.
• Mouldings on the extractor canopy with overmantle add depth and detail.
• Bespoke antique mirror splashback brings character and bounces light back into the room.
• Mixed metals - black ironwork, antique brass door and drawer handles / knobs, with stainless steel on the Aga. 
• Retaining the ledged and braced, tongue and groove original and unusual doors to the utility room and hallway. The beautiful hand-crafted ironmongery in black ties in with the cast-iron Aga Dual Control. 

The result is this calm, uncluttered kitchen, with a beautiful feeling of space.
